Is the PlayStation 4K, colloquially referred to as the PlayStation 4.5, actually real? Well known analyst Michael Pachter certainly does not seem to think so, but you know what they say about smoke and fire- and with so many leaks at this point, there’s definitely a lot of smoke.
After the initial reports regarding this broke out earlier, Digital Foundry is reporting that it has “independently established” the console is, in fact, real. The reason that it is called PlayStation 4K is because it will apparently be capable of outputting images in UHD resolution. The GPU will also apparently have a minor upgrade, running on an upgraded version of AMD’s APU technology. The APU itself will move to a 14nm or 16nm fabrication process, which should bring it in line with industry standards.
All of which makes it sound like a mid life spec bump, not dissimilar to what Nintendo did with the launch of the New Nintendo 3DS last year.
Is it real or not? If it is, we will probably find out some time soon- possibly as early as E3, which is now just a little over two months away.
