The Walking Dead completely redefined storytelling in video games with its very first season, but the second season, while still telling a stirring story, was stagnant as far as advancing the actual storytelling goes. But that will change with the third season, which developers Telltale say will have a whole new bag of tricks to move storytelling forward- which will also account for all the varying endings that players might have reached at the end of the first season.
“When we got to Season 2, we had a plan in the back of our minds of how we would make all these endings keep those threads going forward,” said Telltale Games CEO Kevin Bruner to Mashable.
“From a role-playing, interactive storytelling point of view, it is not from the bag of tricks that we’ve ever shown anybody before. The way that we’re dealing with and validating and retaining all those different playthroughs is really cool and unexpected and, I think, pretty innovative from the storytelling point of view.”
Maybe this means that some of the new mechanics that they are hinting with the upcoming Batman game this summer will carry over into the hypothetical Season 3.
For now, we don’t even know when The Walking Dead Season 3 will come out. Fans can keep themselves busy with The Walking Dead: Michonne miniseries that is currently underway.
