Destiny Rise of Iron DLC Update Won’t Nerf Progression Paths, Says Bungie

With Rise of Iron coming up later this year and introducing new progression paths for players, there has been this persistent fear that existing progression paths in the game may be undermined or nerfed with the new expansion. However, speaking with Stevivor at Gamescom, Bungie’s David ‘DeeJ’ Dague asserted that Destiny’s “Rise of Iron” update won’t nerf progression paths introduced with both “The Taken King” and in the game’s April update.

“We don’t look at the April update and say, ‘that was a mistake, we should backpedal on that’,” DeeJ said. Instead, with the new update, DeeJ insists that the changes in the old updates will be retained and integrated, while the new update brings new progression paths of its own.“We’re leaning into that,” he insisted. “We’re giving you quests that lead to a Gjallarhorn which, to a Year One player, would seem unfathomable.“Like, ‘how do I get a Gjallarhorn?’ – to which you’d have replied, ‘I don’t know, practice baby, practice.’ Now the answer to that question is you go build your own. I think people are going to have a real good sense of ownership about their Gjallarhorn, and it’s an experience that people can share.”

Ultimately, for a game like Destiny, it is important to keep growing and changing, so it’s good to see Bungie doing just that with the new expansion. At the same time, it is also heartening to see that they won’t simply be discarding all that they have done so far, and risk alienating their fanbase either.
