Destiny Rise of Iron’s Legendary Engram Decoding Clarified

If you’re a veteran of Destiny, then you know to save up your Legendary Engrams before a major expansion drops. This is to ensure that any new gear and weapons conform to the new Light level cap. In the case of Rise of Iron, Bungie event stated in its patch notes that “Legendary Engrams can now decode up to 365 Light. Legendary Engram Light value will slow from their fast progress at 350, up to 365 Within that range, Engrams will grant the player something with higher Light about half the time.”

However, when one Reddit user took to decoding his Engrams, most of them dropped at Light level 350. So what gives? As per community manager Cozmo, “As stated in the Patch Notes once you hit 350 Light you are going to have a 50 percent chance to get +1 Light items. So you are right, it’s not optimal to sit at the Cryptarch solely decrypting Engrams. I talked with the Designers and they wanted to find a balance between letting you progress using your stored up Engrams, while also encouraging you to go play Activities to earn better gear. Go run some Strikes, play Supremacy, and check out Archon’s Forge to increase your Light.”

Which makes sense but the problem is whether there really is a 50 percent chance or not. Granted, some players have been able to reach 360 from just decrypting Engrams so it could just be unlucky RNG for one person.
