Mass Effect Andromeda Open World Includes Hostile Bases, Giant Bosses

Bioware wasn’t kidding about making Mass Effect: Andromeda an open world game. Producer Mike Gamble spoke to Game Informer and discussed the various things players will encounter while exploring planets in the Andromeda galaxy.

These include bases belonging to hostile forces. “On most planets there is some level of hostile force, and usually that will be represented by enemy bases or hideouts or whatever you want to call them specific to that planet.”

Director Mac Walters further noted that, “These bases are pretty lengthy to take out, so if you approach one, you want to be prepared before you into it. It’s fun, because there’s a combination of systemic and scripted stuff in there. If you tip off too many enemies, the alarms start going off and you have to shut them off. And there’s usually narrative tied around it.”

You’ll also come across large bosses that will severely overpower you, which doesn’t sound all that different from Dragon Age: Inquisition. “You’ll find creatures and encounters that are so far over-leveled to where you’re at naturally on these areas and you can tell right away. We have a lot of other things like that, where you’ll know that you’re not ready for this, but you’ll know you want to come back,” said Gamble.

For the exploration-minded, there will be areas to go and objects to scan which can be analyzed back at the ship. These yield items which allow you to craft different weapons and armour. Drop zones will also be present, acting as points of fast travel for changing load-outs and uncovering various points of interest on the map. That being said, Gamble said the development team didn’t “want to just give you map markers to follow.”

Mass Effect: Andromeda is out in Q1 2017 for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. What are your thoughts on the open world aspects? Let us know below.
