Overwatch’s Play of the Game 2.0 Could Highlight Teamwork More

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch has seen its fair share of criticisms, not the least of which includes the Play of the Game system. The developer has made changes to it in the past, emphasizing less Mercy resurrections and more useful plays but it could ultimately focus on teamwork in the future.

That’s according to lead hero designer Geoff Goodman in an interview with Kotaku. “There’s a plan to do what we’re calling Play of the Game 2.0. We have a lot of really cool ideas. We want to do a lot with the camera work. We have ideas for cooperative Play of the Games. We want to highlight the combo play itself, to show both.”

The development team wants to put the focus on players who can set up game-changing plays as well as on those who actually execute such plays. Zarya players who Graviton Surge into a Hanzo or Tracer ult will know what we mean. That being said, such changes won’t arrive immediately. “It’s been on the books for a little while. It’s just a matter of prioritising everything. There’s some tricky things there, like how do we handle Play of the Game intros, and how do we decide who gets credit.”

Overwatch will be getting lots of other content in the coming few days – Sombra will be added to the game’s PTR along with Arcade mode and a new map called Ecopoint: Antarctica.
