If you’re a stickler for framerate over resolution – which, I know, I am – then the good news for you should be that the upcoming PS4 action game Nioh can be played at a blazing 60fps on a standard PS4 as well as a PS4 Pro system. You just need to play the game in Action Mode to enable high framerates (switching to movie mode locks the framerate to 30fps, while variable movie mode simply unlocks the framerate but keeps it variable- a disaster for this kind of game).
So, what’s the catch? The catch is in the resolution of the game- playing on action mode (that is 60fps) means that the resolution gets knocked down to 720p on a standard PS4, and varies between 720p to 1080p on a PS4 Pro. The movie mode (60fps) locks the game to 1080p on PS4, and varies between 2160p and 1440p on a PS4 Pro. The variable movie mode goes to 2304×1296.
Basically, you are sacrificing resolution for framerate, fidelity for performance. I am fine with that trade-off- I just wonder if today’s resolution obsessed market will be. Nioh will be available exclusively on the PS4.
