Steam Gifts have changed – Valve has announced that effective immediately, games purchased as gifts on Steam can no longer be stored in one’s inventory. You’ll have to send the gift as soon as you purchase it or schedule it to be delivered at a later date.
It’s also worth pointing out that gifts can no longer be sent through email. The other person must have a Steam account. In case that involve cross-region gifting, Steam will now only showcase the gifting option if it is indeed available. That means you won’t have to guess whether a game can be sent to other regions or not. These changes will only apply on gifts purchased from today onwards.
While these measures are obviously a way to combat third party traders who buy games and then send them as gifts rather than keys, it also makes giveaways offered to communities difficult. You also have to make sure the person you’re gifting to has a Steam ID.
