GTA 5 Modding Is Illegal, Declares Take Two; Cease and Desist Issued

Modding is what helps games thrive on PC, giving them long legs, and keeping them relevant, popular, and profitable even years after release. Bethesda is a prime example of this, and their The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim has whole heartedly embraced mods, and remains one of the most popular games on PC to this day.

However, a lot of companies often fail to understand the utility or value in mods, and then they act stupidly. One of those companies is Take Two, the parent company of Rockstar, the folks who make Grand Theft Auto. GTA has had a long, rich history of modding, which has continued with GTA5. Ignoring all of that, Take Two has declared modding GTA5 to be illegal, and issued a cease and desist to OpenIV, the most popular authoring tool used to make GTA5 mods.

According to the makers of the tool, Take Two contends that the tool violates its right. The guys apparently have no inclination to fight this out in court, so they’ve complied with the requests.

This is stupidly dumb to do, and while GTA5 is too big to be affected by this, I hope the fans create an uproar, so that Take Two is forced to reverse this decision.
