Mafia 3 Video Showcases the Dismantling of Rackets

Hangar 13’s Mafia 3 has a rather compelling story behind it but you won’t just be following the psychological journey of protagonist Lincoln Clay. The open world poses plenty of challenge and other activities to help expand your empire in New Bordeaux.

One of those activities is racket. These essentially concern criminal activities of other gangs and include drugs, slave trading and other nefarious acts. It will be Clay’s jump to take them out, thus adding to his own power and influence in the process. And as noted in past trailers, Lincoln isn’t someone who operates with subtlety. There are explosions and shooting aplenty.

Mafia 3 will be releasing on October 7th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It’s developed by Hangar 13 alongside 2K Czech and will offer a fairly large single-player mode in the New Orleans-inspired town of New Bordeaux. Will you be picking it up? Let us know in the comments below.

Telltale’s Batman Episode 2: Children of Arkham Launches Later This Month

The second episode in Telltale’s take on Batman, titled Children of Arkham, will be coming far sooner than you may have expected- Telltale have announced that it will release on September 20 on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. If you are playing the game on other platforms, the release date will be announced shortly.

The release date is just four days after the announced launch of the physical version of Telltale’s Batman, which launches on disc on September 16. That version, however, will not have all episodes playable right away, with only the first episode available, and other episodes available to download for free as they are made available. It’s actually pretty useless, now that I think about it.

Batman: The Telltale Series is available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, iOS, Android, and PC.

ReCore Looks Great As Usual In This New Launch Trailer

Keiji Inafune’s ReCore is almost here – it launches on September 13 – and ahead of its release less than two weeks from now, Microsoft have put out a new trailer to celebrate the game’s impending launch. And it, as it always does, looks great fun.

ReCore is being developed by the talent that brought us the original Metroid Prime, as well as Keiji Inafune, best known for his work on Mega Man– the game is said to be a new age reimagining of the Legend of Zelda and Metroid franchises, and you can definitely see shades of those games in the new trailer below.

The game will be launching on Xbox One and Windows 10- it is the first Xbox Play Anywhere game to be launched, actually (although Microsoft have launched PC versions of their Xbox games previously, too). It will be out on September 13- let us know what you think of the launch trailer below in the comments section.

Titanfall 2 Video Showcases Legion’s Destructive Minigun

While Respawn Entertainment released a trailer earlier this week for all six of Titanfall 2’s Titans, it’s starting to focus on each one. The newest video is about Legion, the Ogre-like Titan that wields an enormous chaingun. Check it out below.

Legion is a slow lumbering Titan but packs a punch thanks to his Predator Cannon. This weapon has several different firing modes including the ability to add a shield for blocking some damage in front of Legion, a Power Shot for a single burst of power and an ult which channels Soldier 76’s Tactical Visor, shooting anything within its range like aimbot’s been enabled. In terms of high damage, Legion looks to be quite the threat though again, its mobility could be its downfall.

Titanfall 2 releases on October 28th for PC, Xbox One and PS4. What are your thoughts on the new Titans, specifically Legion? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information (and videos) in the coming weeks.

Nintendo NX Will Use Cartridges, Announcement Could Come Before TGS - Report

Another day, another Nintendo NX rumor. This one comes from The Wall Street Journal (via NeoGAF), however, who are known for their exemplary track record when it comes to video games leaks, rumors, and reports. According to this new report, it seems like Nintendo plan on using cartridges for the upcoming Nintendo NX system.

Cartridges were used for early video game systems, until the PlayStation and Sega Saturn popularized optical media; Nintendo, famously, stuck with cartridges with the Nintendo 64, which led to a widespread loss of third party support, owing to cartridges’ at the time weaknesses, such as high costs, and low storage space.

None of those issues hold true, any more- cartridges have gotten progressively cheaper over the last two decades, owing to solid state and flash memory prices crashing. Moreover, chip-based cartridges are garnering renewed attention thanks to fierce competition among semiconductor makers including Samsung Electronics Co. and Toshiba Corp. to develop flash memory that can pack more data onto small chips at a lower cost, The Wall Street Journal is reporting. Moreover, modern flash memory is also faster to produce than optical media, meaning cartridges would now have shorter lead in times than discs for third parties- a reversal of one of their biggest disadvantages from over 20 years ago.

The report also contends that a reveal of some sort of the system is coming, and sooner than we might think- an announcement of the system could come ahead of the Tokyo Game Show, which begins on September 15. If this were to hold true, then some official word on the NX could be coming from Nintendo within the next two weeks.

The Nintendo NX is currently slated for a launch worldwide in March 2017.

Resident Evil 4 Xbox One Review: Welcome To Spain…Again

It’s funny how Capcom’s Resident Evil 4 has aged over the years since its initial release in 2005. Back then were the blissful days of games telling stories of worlds we could only dream of. What makes it so funny, however, is the fact that Resident Evil 4’s story hasn’t aged well at all. Back in the day most gamers would consider the story so groundbreaking that it felt like Shakespearean poetry. But now, “I’m looking for the president’s daughter,” as Leon tells a couple of sketchy drivers on the way to a small town…it just doesn’t maintain that sense of realism any longer. I mean, who goes around touting about his secret mission? But besides the hilarious one-liners we have all come to familiarize with the Resident Evil franchise, the game, still to this day, doesn’t miss a beat gameplay wise.

For those unfamiliar with the story — or the legacy in which this game is considered to be the best of the series by many — you play in a third person perspective as Leon Kennedy, a former Raccoon City police officer in a series of events that take place six years after those of Resident Evil 2. A cult have kidnapped the president’s daughter and taken her to a small town in Spain. From there, Leon finds out about the strange goings on about the cult Los Illuminados, and their plot for control and some more eeriness you’d have to see to believe.

For a game that’s well over a decade old and slapped with higher definition detail, Resident Evil 4 holds up surprising well in the visuals department. Some may be astonished that a game nearly 12 years old still looks pretty fresh, but others may realize that 2005 (when the game was released) was nearing the end of the GameCube generation — and graphics near the end of a generation are usually at their peak. Every blade of grass is as crisp and clear as any modern day game. You won’t find any smudge or muddy moments throughout the entire experience. Even in the pause menu, it’s nearly possible to see every detail on Leon’s classic brown, leather jacket.

Of course this game has improved definition and not an overhaul of graphics (aka remaster), so there will be those unfortunately sharp edges on items you’d expect to be smooth, or shapes in some places that are just out current standards. Back when games would have a graphical fade-in effect, Resident Evil 4 suffers from none of that. As far as the eyes can see, there are highly detailed backdrops that are instantly visible without an ominous fog casting its ugly gaze over a beautiful landscape. Everywhere you look there will be something — and it’s not fog (unless, of course, you’re in a foggy location).

Another aspect of the original game was its stellar voice cast that really made the characters jump out and be someone. Even back in 2005 voice over casts were just beginning to become mainstream for most games. Again, Resident Evil 4’s voice cast holds up spectacularly. From the laid back yet moody Leon Kennedy to the secretive and seductive Ada Wong, there isn’t a beat missed from any single performance.

The Resident Evil franchise has always been a fetch quest series: “run to this location, find crank, now run over there, put crank it, and the next door opens.” And Resident Evil 4 follows suit, to a much lesser degree. There are plenty of quests to do something trivial just to get to the next location, but the game changes the experience by adding in an AI co-op partner later on in the game. For those familiar with the original release and still true in the HD version is that the AI co-op partner actually does its job (notice how unspecific I am about who this partner is?). In-game situations will force Leon to protect his partner while the partner does a task that allows the duo to move forward in the game.

One of my fondest memories of the original release of Resident Evil 4 was its unique and often terrifying atmospheres. I’m not usually scared by horror games generally, but there’s something about quietly scampering around a sewer system knowing there are monsters waiting to pop out.

As the series takes an unusual spin by placing the fourth game in Spain, there are some rather outlandish landscapes: rural villages, condemned castles, humid lakes, and all out spooky locales. From unsettles hues of browns and grays, to pitch blacks and bloody reds, every moment holds up in many all-too-real moments throughout the entire experience.

What hit me as an unusual, and for the most part unfortunate, was Capcom’s lack of improvement on the overall controller layout. The controls are absolutely sluggish. Aiming takes the tap of the left trigger while the right analog stick is used to position Leon and his gun, rifle, or knife. Controlling the movement after pulling the left trigger is eye gouging slow. Sure, Resident Evil is supposed to be a slow paced horror game, but modernized games have proven that a game can be terrifying with speedy controls. On top of that the camera was never updated and modernized itself. You get a left pan, right pan, and it always goes back to center, over the shoulder perspective. It works, but it isn’t comfortable. If Capcom would have unlocked the camera and allowed for a full 360 degree rotation then this game would have been nearly completely modernized.

When you’ve completed the journey there’s bonus content waiting for you. The “Separate Ways” campaign lets you play as Ada Wong who’s mission takes place in parallel with the events of Leon in the main story. The Mercenaries mode is pretty much Horde: gear up and take out as many enemies to earn a high score. These additions, some of which were later included in the PlayStation 2 version, are a nice additive but do little to add much more to an already excellent game.

For a game that’s well over a decade old, Resident Evil 4 holds up extremely well. Its fantastic pacing, more-than-creepy locales, and abundance of terrific thrills allows this fourth game in the main series to hold the crown as the best game in the franchise. There are awkward and unnecessary moments in the story from time to time, and an unbalanced control system, but overall this game is still one of the greatest games of all time. It’s kind of a shame that the developers did not put in more effort to improve the visuals even more (other than the optional motion blur effect which honestly is quite bad) but looking back Capcom really hit their stride with this entry in the beloved series, I just wish they could do it again with the upcoming Resident Evil 7.

THE GOOD
Beautifully eerie atmosphere, authentically terrifying moments, fun game play mechanics, and stellar voice cast.

THE BAD
The story has its share of awkward moments. Also the controls are a tad old school.

FINAL VERDICT
Resident Evil 4 holds its crown as the best game in the series. A great voice cast can't always cover up some awkward story moments, but the atmosphere and experience alone should have almost everyone playing this game sometime in his or her life.

Overwatch Getting Free Weekend On PS4; PS Plus Not Required

Gears of War 4 New Trailer Shows Off Horde Mode 3.0

A new Gears game is around the corner, which also means a brand new Horde Mode. The signature multiplayer mode of the franchise will be in its third iteration this time around, and to show us exactly what’s changed (and what’s the same) this time around, Microsoft released a brand new trailer for the game dedicated to showing us the revamped mode.

“Fan favorite five player co-op mode, Horde, returns with Gears of War 4 and with it comes a landslide of new features including character classes, skills, abilities and much more. This is your first look at the five-vs-all, 50 waves of escalating mayhem that is Horde 3.0,” Microsoft said about the new take on the returning mode.

Gears of War 4 will launch on October 11, exclusively for the Xbox One, as well as for PCs running Windows 10. It is slated to be a Play Anywhere title, and it will feature limited Cross-Play, supporting co-operative, but not competitive, gaming across the PC and Xbox.

Destiny Rise of Iron: Private Matches Count Towards Grimoire

Bungie has revealed a ton of information about its upcoming Destiny expansion Rise of Iron, courtesy of Game Informer’s podcast. Game director Chris Barrett and executive producer Scott Taylor fielded questions from the community to clarify what players could expect in September.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, like House of Wolves, there will be some kind of pre-Rise of Iron content to keep players occupied one week before launch. Taken Champions will still spawn during Patrols so don’t worry. Rise of Iron will go live at 2 AM PST at reset on September 20th but will be available for pre-orders beforehand.

And for those wondering about the Private Matches, they will indeed count towards your Grimoire score and Daily Crucible bounties. They won’t work for quests or weekly bounties however so don’t count on boosting your way to an Exotic sword of First Curse.

Destiny’s Rise of Iron will only be available for Xbox One and PS4 when it becomes available. Are you looking forward to it? Let us know below.

Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection Leaked - Rumor

Earlier this year, Ubisoft promised that after a few years of increasingly misguided games in the franchise, Assassin’s Creed would be taking a break this year- no new title in the series would be released in 2016. To their credit, they have stuck to their word, and no new Assassin’s Creed game is announced for release this Fall.

But they wouldn’t be Ubisoft if there wasn’t at least one retail release of Assassin’s Creed this year- and they’ve already promised no new game for this year. What are they to do, then? Why, release an Assassin’s Creed remaster collection, of course!

Assassin’s Creed: Ezio Collection has appeared on the Korean Ratings Board, which is already a good sign that it’s nearing release. Corroborating these rumors is French publication Gameblog (via GameSpot), who have posted promotional material and multiple details about the still-unconfirmed collection, including the games it will include – Assassin’s Creed II, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, and Assassin’s Creed Revelation – as well as the fact that it will run at 1080p and 30fps. In addition to these three games, it will also have all of the three games’ DLC, and animated movies Assassin’s Creed: Lineage and Assassin’s Creed: Embers, making this ridiculously good value..

As of right now, it’s not been officially confirmed yet, so we can’t tell you much more, or when it will be out- the rumors peg it as a full priced $60 collection launching this November for Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Super Mario Maker For Nintendo 3DS Announced During Nintendo Direct

Looks like Nintendo weren’t kidding about proper 3DS support even with the impending launch of the Nintendo NX. This was one of the more obvious games Nintendo could have put on the 3DS, so I am honestly surprised it took this long- Super Mario Maker, the hit Mario level creation tool that launched exclusively on the Wii U last year, is going to be launching on Nintendo 3DS later this year.

The 3DS version of the game features some reduced functionality over the Wii U game, including some tools that are omitted, as well as significantly pared back online functionality (while local sharing of courses and levels is supported, it sounds like direct online sharing of courses is not permitted), although it does sound like most Wii U levels will be playable on 3DS via online servers.

Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS is scheduled for December 2, 2016, exclusively on the Nintendo 3DS.

Destiny Rise of Iron New Info: Radiant Treasures, Permanent SRL and More

More information about Destiny: Rise of Iron has emerged courtesy of the Game Informer podcast, this time relating to Radiant Treasures, vendor gear and Trials of Osiris gear. Radiant Treasures will be your source for the new ornaments which completely revamp the look of some guns. Interestingly, these can be broken down into silver dust to purchase items from Eververse or other ornaments from Xur, which rotate each week.

Vendor Gear will see an increase in Light level but the developer is still undecided by how much. There won’t be an increase to Vault space but there are plans to expand this later. Year Three Exotics are planned to exist alongside Year Two Exotics in the kiosk rather than receiving their own tab.

And though SRL will be returning later this year, Bungie refused to comment on whether it would be permanent or not. And for those who appreciate the Year Two Trials of Osiris gear, better log on this weekend since it won’t be available after Rise of Iron launches.

Destiny: Rise of Iron arrives on September 20th, exclusive to PS4 and Xbox One.

Nintendo NX Sketch and Size Details Leaked- Report

Even though Nintendo refuse to share any details on the NX officially, leaks and rumors are coming in thick and thin. Today, Let’s Play Video Games, who have been at the forefront of a whole lot of NX leaks over the last few days, have shared some more details on what to expect from the upcoming handheld-console hybrid device.

The report reiterates that the NX will have a split D-pad, of the style found on PlayStation systems; it notes that the NX has a D-pad, two analog sticks, A, B, X, Y buttons, Home, Start, Select, and a Camera/Share button. It’s slightly thicker than the Nintendo 3DS XL when folded, so 25 mm, with a width of around 281 mm and a height of 92 mm with the controllers attached. Separated, the controllers have the same depth and height, and they both have a width of 38 mm, making the unit itself have a width of 205 mm.

The controllers attach to it with a mechanism that seems to be not unlike the one found on Microsoft’s Surface Book, which is a similar laptop/tablet hybrid; meanwhile, a headphone jack, a TV connection port, an SD card port, and a cartridge port are all present on the device, too. The prototype unit has 32GB of on board memory, and supports both, Unity and Unreal Engine 4, which means the NX should not suffer from the kind of paucity of third party support that the Wii U did.

You can check out some rough sketches illustrating what it looks like below. The Nintendo NX is currently scheduled for a March 2017 launch.

MGS 5’s Chapter 3 May Be Related To Nuclear Disarmament

Earlier today, we reported that Konami had confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5‘s episode 51 was not going to be the ending– which begs the question as to what the datamined Chapter 3 card that has been so widely circulated since last year is.

With the Definitive Edition now having been confirmed to not have any extra content, most MGS fans at this point have given up hope that The Phantom Pain‘s missing content will ever see the light of day. However, just because it does not have any extra content does not mean that it will not have Chapter 3- which may sound contradictory, but Robert Allen Peeler, Online Community Manager for the Metal Gear franchise, has hinted that Chapter 3 may be nothing more than nuclear disarmament, a widely known endgame goal of The Phantom Pain since last year, on Twitter. In response to a fan trying to speculate on what Peeler may have meant, he also said ‘the simplest answer is… the correct one, no need to overthink it.’

On Reddit, he also said that the team sees no reason to remove the datamined Chapter 3: Peace card at this point, since it’s so widely in circulation anyway. Speaking about what would happen if disarmament was achieved, he also said that nuclear disarmament is something that he would like to see happen, but it’s entirely up to the players to trigger that. That said, he did refuse to commit to something actually happening when disarmament actually happens.

Meanwhile, the Metal Gear official Twitter account noted that the development team has no plans to trigger the disarmament cutscenes manually- so if players can achieve global nuclear disarmament, good on them. If not, looks like we may never get to see the disarmament peace ending officially.

Metal Gear Solid 5 is now available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, and PC, with the Definitive Edition releasing on PS4, Xbox One, and PC in October.

Overwatch Dev “Really Wants” to Allow Skin Changes During Matches

Blizzard Entertainment has been fairly receptive towards player’s needs in Overwatch, especially when it comes down to tuning certain heroes and aspects of gameplay (no more Sudden Death in Competitive Play, for instance). One such option it’s been holding off on is a rather bizarre request – the ability to change hero skins while in a match.

Director Jeff Kaplan addressed the request and noted that with regards to changing them before matches, “We also would like to give you this option. Our design for it allows for changing skins during ‘Assemble your heroes’ but not after that phase.

“We want people to be able to change skins before a match but we also don’t want people changing skins mid-match. We have two reasons for this: 1) Your team needs you. Go help them, 2) We don’t want to add confusion to the ‘read’ of the game by having people constantly changing appearances during the map.

“This feature has been on our list for a very long time and is something we want to make happen. It usually gets de-prioritized for other things (such as the Season 2 competitive changes). It’s something we really want to do though.”

It’s likely to happen sometime in the near future but don’t count on changing skins mid-game to “fool” your enemies.

PS4 Neo And Xbox One Scorpio Remove Strict Limitations of Consoles

Back in 2013, less than three years ago when the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 first launched, I don’t think any of us ever suspected that we would be having major new hardware launches so soon- and yet, here we are in mid 2016, and on the cusp of new systems from Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo- it’s practically a new hardware generation, in a sense, especially once you throw in new paradigms like VR into the mix.

It’s all this new hardware that’s presumably as exciting for gaming developers as it is for us consumers. Speaking to GamingBolt, Reinhard Pollice, Business and Product Development Director at THQ Nordic discussed his take on all the new systems coming up.

“VR platforms are definitely a new generation, but right now they aren’t replacing anything, just broadening it and bringing some exciting new possibilities,” he said. “Neo, Scorpio, and the NX seem to be more traditional gaming consoles with a lot of power which is great as working on consoles always meant strict limitations.”

Speaking strictly about the Neo and Scorpio, and about the difference between Sony’s more incremental approach compared to Microsoft’s more dramatic leap, Pollice said, “This is a pretty new situation for all developers so I think we all have to wait for the consumer’s feedback first. We are ok with both approaches as long as there aren’t any rules or artificial barriers that block real steps forward when creating games.”

Finally, he also shared his thoughts on suddenly having two new SKUs to develop for with the Neo and Scorpio. “I think Sony and Microsoft will need to ensure that they won’t have completely new SKUs but rather subsets where a few variables are different. Until they announce exact details I can’t really say much about this,” he said.

On the whole, it seems like this is uncharted territory for everybody- so Pollice’s caution does make sense here. But, as he points out, the expanded capabilities of the Neo, Scorpio, and NX should ensure that console development continues to get more and more attractive for developers.
